Obituary

Carol Roberta Cain Hatfield, 76, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 17 in San Antonio, Texas. Carol was born on July 19, 1935 to the late Donna (Weirich) Cain and Kenneth Cain in Richmond, Indiana and lived in Richmond most of her life. Mrs. Hatfield was a dedicated kindergarten and primary grade teacher. Her early teaching years were spent in Lafayette, Indiana and Indianapolis, Indiana public schools. Carol taught at Seton Catholic School in Richmond for 22 years before her retirement in 1997. A 1953 graduate of Richmond High School, Carol received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Marian College, (Indianapolis, IN.) in 1958, a teacher's certificate from Purdue University in 1961, and a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from Ball State University in 1982. Carol was also an Avon Representative for 34 years and a homemaker, raising five daughters with her husband, Joseph Hatfield. She loved to travel, and especially enjoyed the many trips she and Joe made to Texas to visit their daughters' families and their grandchildren. Carol has been an active member of St. Andrew Catholic Church since 1952. At St. Andrew, she served on the Liturgy Committee, was a Parish Council member, a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound, and a member of Catholic Women United and the Young Men's Institute (YMI). Mrs. Hatfield was a member of Birthright, serving on the board, participated in many bible study and catechism classes in the Richmond Catholic Community, and enjoyed being a Seton School "study buddy" for many years after her retirement as a teacher there. Carol was also a devoted Associate Member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg. In addition to her many church activities, Mrs. Hatfield was a member of the Ex Teacher's Club, and the Wayne County Retired Teachers' Association. On August 12, 1961, Carol Cain married Joseph Hatfield, who preceded her in death on June 10, 2008. Carol and Joe's youngest daughter, Maria Williams, passed away in April, 2011. Carol is survived by her brother, James Cain of Crivitz, Wisconsin, Maria's husband, Gregory Williams of San Antonio, Texas and four daughters, Teresa Henson (Don) of Richmond, Anna Warren (Kevin) of Round Rock, Texas, Susan Pulis (Steven) of Kyle, Texas and Rita Crawford (Tom) of Boerne, Texas. Carol loved her grandchildren and took great pride in keeping in touch with each one of them, writing them letters, spending time with them, and attending their events and activities. Her grandchildren are Matthew and Tyler Henson, Dylan, Riley, Whit and Aubrey Warren, Lauren and Christina Crawford, and Kelsey, Miles and Kennedy Williams. She also has two great grandchildren, Emma and Ella Henson. Carol's friendliness and love for others is evident in the many, many students, families, friends and neighbors she touched in Richmond. An avid letter writer, Carol stayed in contact with lifelong friends near and far, and quickly made many new friends in 2008 when she moved to Arbor Trace in Richmond and in February, 2011 when she moved to the Village at Incarnate Word Retirement Community (San Antonio, Texas). In lieu of flowers, Carol asked that memorial contributions be made to one of the following organizations: St Andrew Parish, Seton Catholic Schools, Marian University (Indianapolis, IN.), Birthright of Richmond, The Sisters of St. Francis (Oldenburg, IN.), Richmond Community Food Pantry, the Richmond Senior Community Center, The American Heart Association, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or the Arthritis Foundation.
