Obituary

Eugene "Gene" Norman Griffith, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home on August 30, 2025 with his family by his side. He was born on April 11,1939 in Richmond. Gene was born to Carl Sr. and Tincy (Minnick) Griffith and was fostered at a young age by Harrold and Harriett Hartman of Boston, Indiana. He retired as an electrician from the Richmond State Hospital where he held several other positions within his 40+ years of service, he was known for his impressive knowledge and skills. Gene had several nicknames over the years, some of them being "Mean-Gene", "Walking-boss", "Spanky", "Griff", "Cow Mechanic", "Jellybean", "Archie Bunker" and was known in his younger years by his family as "Buddy". He also worked on various farms in the area when he was younger, including Clevenger Dairy Farm in Centerville, Indiana.

Gene graduated from Boston High School (Boston, Indiana), class of 1959, where he played basketball as a guard. He served in the U.S. Army for 8 years, 1962-1970, as an infantry man and mechanic. He was stationed in Washington during the Cuban missile crisis and was honorably discharged as a SPC 4 (E-4). Gene met the love of his life, Victoria "Vickie" Lacy and they were married on November 14, 1964 at the Salvation Army Church.

He is survived by his six kids: Ronda (partner Arvie Berry), Kevin, Carol (partner Troy Morris), Penny (Randy) Wells, Robin, Kelly and a special son-in-law Chester; sister Carole (Marvin) Robbins; brother Jerry; foster brother Raymond A. Siler; 11 grandchildren: granddaughters Jessica (Demond), Andrea (Joey), Shannon (Nate), Mindy (Charles) and Morgan (Ryan); grandsons Darren (Kisha), Adam (Bethany), Dillon (Meagan), Phillip (Kelsie), Tyler (Jordan) and Cody; 11 great-grandson's; 9 great-granddaughters; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Victoria "Vickie", his parents, siblings and son-in-law Joe Cook.

The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers, Ms. "K" and the hospice team for the excellent care they provided.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary to help offset funeral expenses.

Services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday September 8, 2025 at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary. Burial will follow in Elkhorn Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 11am-2pm Monday September 8, 2025 at the funeral home.
