Obituary

George Emery Sauer, Jr, 89, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2012 after a long, heroic battle against cancer. George was born in Carrollton, Kentucky on August 18, 1923 to Emery and Melba Sauer. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, his parents Emery and Melba, his sister Kate Lewis, and his brothers Charles and Bobby Sauer. George is survived by and will be greatly missed by his son George Sauer III (Chris) and daughter Susan Geesa (Roy). He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Kate Brinn (Lyle), Rachel Geesa, Jeff Geesa and Libby Sauer; sisters Pete Crane, Joyce Kennedy and Sherry Campbell (Carl) and brother Butch Sauer (Ok Ye). He was extremely close to his grandchildren and had a special love for each of them. Family was important to George and he always showed his love and concern to all his family members including nieces, nephews, cousins and distant relatives. George graduated from Richmond High School in 1942, attended TCU, was in the Army at the close of World War II and worked in Richmond his entire life. He worked at the Palladium-Item, Crosley and then Avco for 21 years, Earlham College for 10 years, Richmond Parks Department for 6 years and Jack Daggy Flowers for the last few years. He was a hard worker who always gave his best to anything he undertook. He loved being outside and with people and his different jobs allowed him to do just that. George was an exceptional athlete in his younger days playing baseball and basketball on several levels. He played a lot of handball and golf and never lost his competitive spirit. He loved music and dancing. He loved his garden. He was well known around town for his friendly spirit and genuine concern for everyone he came in contact with. It is often said that he knew no strangers. He probably has as many friends as anyone we know. He took his time to make everyone feel special. He never complained and pursued his hobbies and activities with great energy. He will be missed by his family and his many, many friends in Richmond and Wayne County. George was an active member of American Legion Post 65, Druids Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1108. His family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his many doctors and their staffs, Reid Hospital and staff, Arbor Trace and staff, especially in Henley Hall and the rehab center and AseraCare Hospice. The wonderful efforts of these many fine people greatly helped George through the last few years of his life. Visitation will be at Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary on Friday (November 16, 2012) from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (November 17, 2012) at the funeral home.
