Kenneth Leroy Bortner, 1914-2009 Kenneth Leroy Bortner, 94, a resident of the Wesley Glen Retirement Community in Columbus, Ohio, passed away on March 24, 2009. Ken was born on April 28, 1914, to Elza and Nancy Anna (Moore) Bortner in Randolph County, Indiana. He graduated from Hollansburg (OH) High School in 1932 with his sweetheart, Ethel Catherine Lichtenfels. They married on June 28, 1936. Ken and Catherine raised their daughters, Judy and Joyce, in Richmond, Indiana, where Ken worked as a wood patternmaker for National Automatic Tool Company. They were active members of First Christian Church. They relocated to Columbus, Indiana, and Ken worked until retirement at Engelking Pattern Company. They enjoyed traveling in Europe, the Holy Land, China, and Africa. Catherine died on October 4, 1984. In Columbus, Indiana, Ken continued his community involvement as a member of North Christian Church, the Golden-K Kiwanis Club, and as a frequent volunteer with Bartholomew County Hospital. He enjoyed traveling to Great Britain, Ireland, India, and to Elderhostels throughout the United States. Ken was an accomplished woodworker. From organ grilles for First Christian Church and altar pieces for North Christian Church to wooden toys for charities and remodeling work on mission projects, he gave of himself. Ken is survived by his brothers, Paul Bortner of Greenville, Ohio, and Francis Bortner of Redmond, Oregon; daughter Judith Bortner Heffernan and husband William of Rocheport, Missouri; daughter Joyce Bortner Johnson and husband David of Hilliard, Ohio; granddaughter Lisa Heffernan Weil and husband Daniel of Columbia, Missouri; granddaughters Teresa Ann Johnson and Amanda Johnson Willenberg and husband Zachary of Hilliard, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Nathan Weil, Gabriel and Catherine Willenberg. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister Mary Helen Bortner, and brothers Ernest, Donald, and Gerald Bortner. Calling will be held at the Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary, 32 South 11th Street, Richmond, Indiana, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. A service celebrating his life will be held there at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Hollansburg Cemetery.
