Thelma Goris, age 86, passed away on Sunday August 27, 2023 at Reid Health.
Born September 10, 1936, in Lafayette, Indiana, Thelma was proud of the fact that she was a PK (Preacher's Kid) and thankful for the Christian upbringing she had from her parents – Rev. George and Martha Goris.
A graduate of Richmond High School and Ball State University, she was an elementary school teacher for 36 years (2 in Logansport, 3 in Germany and 31 in Richmond Community Schools). She loved teaching and tried to help her students experience the joy of learning.
Thelma was a history buff and enjoyed reading. Books could be found in every room of her house, including her vehicles. She enjoyed the great outdoors, a walk in the woods, or a stroll along the ocean. She also loved traveling and was fortunate to have visited 75 different countries in all 7 continents. She was very proud of the fact that she had walked at least 10 kilometers in every state. Her experiences were limitless, and she loved to share them. All you had to do was name a place and you would hear about an entertaining, captivating adventure.
She loved animals and usually had some treats hidden in a pocket. She enjoyed sports, particularly Indiana basketball, but her sporting list kept expanding – the latest additions were cricket and curling.
Laughter, a chuckle, and smiles were an essential part of her day. She simply loved life and was thankful to God for all his blessings.
She was preceded in death by her parents and favorite brother-in-law, Bill Beard.
Thelma is survived by her sister Anita Beard (spouse and "official" brother-in-law George Newman), nephews Rodney and Brian (Darlene) Beard; cousins and many friends.
Pastor Chip Belanga will officiate services for Thelma at 1:00 P.M. on Friday (September 1, 2023) at First English Lutheran Church, with burial immediately following the service in Earlham cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am-1:00 pm on Friday (September 1, 2023) at the church.
In lieu of flowers Thelma asks that you demonstrate brotherly love by doing a thoughtful deed of kindness. Thelma wishes to honor her Father, a Presbyterian minister, pastoring at Second Presbyterian Church in Richmond for over 30 years. To continue his legacy, donations may be sent to his alma mater.
