Thelma M. Wright, age 84, passed away on Tuesday morning (April 29, 2014) at her home surrounded by love as clouds and rain gave way to brilliant sunshine. She was born in Richmond on April 14th, 1930 to Elmer and Mae Hickey and had lived here all her life. She attended Richmond High School where she played the French horn, and later played alto in the Salvation Army Church Band. Thelma once told her parents that she was going out with her girlfriends, but she was actually meeting the man who would later become her husband of 59 years, Jack. Thelma loved to "spoil" all of the young people in the family and made this a common practice for several generations. Thelma enjoyed traveling with her family and friends, and has a large collection of pictures and unique mementos from their times together. A favorite spot to visit was Las Vegas, where she was known to stay at the slots all night, waiting, because she just knew her machine was due to hit big. She and her husband owned race cars for many years which often led to "spirited" competition at several local tracks. This love of racing continued with trips to the Daytona, Atlanta and Michigan Speedways. Thelma also enjoyed watching cooking shows, QVC, The Hallmark Channel and WWE wrestling. She was very fond of animals, especially her Shelties and current dogs Lacy and Gizmo. She had worked at Hill's Roses, Debolt Concrete and later Matthews (Middleboro Stone Quarry) where she retired after 28 years. Thelma was known for her generosity in many aspects of her life; Her Time through volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, Her Love of Life as she never met a stranger, and her Treasure as she never turned away anyone in need. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Mae Hickey; her husband Jack R. Wright; and a brother "Little" Elmer Hickey. Thelma is survived by her son Jack (Sandy) Wright Jr; brother Maj. Donald Hickey of Leesburg, Florida; granddaughter Jacqueline (Smoky) Farmer; grandson Scott (Kim) Wright; great-grandchildren Dustin Rodandello, Kassi Campbell, Aiden Wright and Griffin Wright; great-great-grandchildren Tayler Campbell, Noah Ford (Rodandello) and Wyatt Swain; aunt Christine Kilgore; and several sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and her dogs Lacy and Gizmo. Services for Thelma will be held on Monday (May 5th, 2014) at 11 a.m. in Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary. Maj. Donald Hickey will officiate. Burial will follow in Earlham Cemetery. Friends and family may call on Sunday (May 4th, 2014) from 5 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
