Obituary

Carl Evan Smith, age 87, of Richmond, died Wednesday evening (August 3, 2005) at Reid Hospital. He was born on July 15, 1918 on Snail Creek Road in Brookville, Indiana to Alexander Martin and Carrie Etta Lacy Smith and he attended Brookville schools. He married Catherine B. Halstead in September 1939 and together they had eight children. Carl owned and operated a coal company while living in Brookville. He worked at several lumber companies in Richmond including Wayne County Lumber Company, Richmond Lumber Company and PK Lumber Company before retiring. After retirement, he worked part-time for Tom Raper RV's delivering campers to and from various locations.. His wife Catherine died in March 1981. In 1983 he met and married Margaret Gaynelle "Peggy" Frazer Smith. Carl and Margaret were avid campers and spent many winters in Florida. He made many friends during his travels. Carl was a member of the Williamsburg Church of the Nazarene and of the Area 9 Agency on Aging. He was a member and board member of the Richmond Senior Center and had belonged to the Home Builders Association. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Patti (John) Stephenson of Williamsburg
Carla (David) Curry of Liberty
Son - Rolla (Mary) Smith of Richmond
Step-Son - John Gnau of Richmond
His daughters, Etta DeLucio, died in April 1975 and Mary Ellen Willett died in February 2000. Four brothers, Claude, William, Herbert and Curtis Smith are also deceaded.
Together, Carl and Margaret have thirty grandchildren (two deceased) and forty three great grandchildren (two deceased).
Services will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday (August 8, 2005) in Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary. Burial will be in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens where military graveside services will be conducted by the Wayne County Veterans Council. Friends may call on Sunday (August 7, 2005) from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. www.riggle-waltermann.com
