Obituary

Dana F. Alvey, age 83, of Richmond went to be with the Lord on Sunday April 30, 2023. She was born on May 7, 1939, in Richmond, Indiana to Kesley and Ledra (Nelson) Black. She was a lifelong resident of Richmond and loved this city. She went Vaile and Garfield Elementary schools and Hibberd Jr. High School. She was a 1957 graduate of Richmond High School and was a lifelong Red Devil having been part of Block R in high school. She was a leader for many of the Class of 1957 class reunions and loved working with her friends every five years for these events.

Dana first worked for an insurance company in Cincinnati. Then she returned to Richmond and worked for Harrington Hoch Insurance Agency for 44 years starting as the receptionist and retiring as President. When her kids were growing up she and her husband Darrel spent many hours volunteering during the summers at the Optimist baseball leagues. During the business management portion of her work life, she was a member and one time President of the Richmond Rotary Club. Just prior to and during her retirement years she found purpose spending time with and watching after her dad and sisters until their passings. She was happy and positive almost all of the time and loved the social aspect of life. She loved to shop and not just for herself but for all her kids and grandkids. She was a generous, charitable, kind soul. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Kelly (Amy) Alvey of Virginia Beach, Jack (Lisa) Alvey of Noblesville and Brady Alvey of Richmond; 7 grandchildren -Sarah (Alvey) Hatton of Lexington, Jackson Alvey of Bozeman, Abigail (Alvey) Nixon Salt Lake City, Joseph Alvey, Brandon Alvey, Tyler Alvey, and Ashley (Alvey) Edwards all of Muncie, 4 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and David Biddle. Jane Bumbalough also provided care and comfort to Darrel and Dana in their last years. In addition to her parents, Dana is preceded in death by her husband Darrel and siblings Jack Black, Patricia Canan, Natalie Beckman, William Black and Connie Whitaker.

Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 6, 2023 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Father Sengole Gnanaraj will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday May 5, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary, 32 South 11th St. Richmond.
