Frank H. Waltermann, age 76, of Richmond, died Sunday morning (August 2, 2015) at his residence. He was born in Richmond on November 14, 1938 to Joseph M. and Mary Amelia (Deuser) Waltermann and had lived here all of his life. He was a graduate of Richmond High School. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and served at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and in Panama. Frank enjoyed skydiving and continued it as a hobby for many years after. He returned to Indiana and graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science. His father had started a funeral business in 1910 and Frank joined the funeral business as a co-owner in Riggle and Waltermann in 1960. Frank was an active participant in the Indiana Funeral Directors Association and was president of the association in 1976. He was interested in political science and government and continued his education receiving a bachelor's degree from Indiana University East and a master's degree from Ball State University. He ran for Mayor of Richmond and won two consecutive terms from 1984 to 1991. His father had also been a mayor from 1935-1938. Frank remained in public service working for the State of Indiana in the State Personnel Department and then later as the Human Resources Director for the Richmond State Hospital. At the end of his career he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experience in politics and government with students as an adjunct instructor at Indiana University East. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Mary Merchanthouse; children Anne (Marc) Murphy of Fishers, Indiana, Joe (Julie) Waltermann of Greenwood, Indiana and Marc (Hannah) Waltermann of Fishers, Indiana; step-children Julie (Art) Gately of Skokie, Illinois and Marty (Jamie) Merchanthouse of West Jordan, Utah; sister Gertrude Cloud of Tucson, Arizona; brother Charles Waltermann of Richmond; 8 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Frank, Jr. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (August 8, 2015) in Saint Andrew Church. Father John Luerman will officiate. Burial will be in Saint Andrew Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
