Geneva L. "Gene" Allen, age 84, of Richmond, died Tuesday afternoon (November 11, 2008) at Reid Hospital. She was born in Richmond on April 7, 1924 to Melvin and Vida Halstead Smith and had lived here all of her life. She was a graduate of Richmond High School and had worked for the FBI and the American Red Cross in Washington DC following her graduation. She worked for several accounting firms in Richmond until 1964 when she opened her own accounting office which she operated until her retirement. She was an Enrolled Agent for the federal government and in 1966 she also opened the local family owned Manpower franchise. Gene was an active member of First Christian Church where she had served as treasurer for many years. She was a member of the Indiana Association of Public Accountants and of the National Society of Public Accountants. She was a member and past president of the American Business Women's Association where she had received the Woman of the Year Award. Gene had served two terms as a member of Richmond City Council and had served as a member of the Richmond-Wayne County Chamber Action Team. She was a member of the Elks Lodge and of Phi Chi Epsilon Sorority. Survivors include her husband of fifty-five years - Charles "Jack" Allen; son - Michael J. Allen of Richmond; daughter - Paula J. Gottschalk of Richmond; sister - Roberta (Claude) Morency of West Palm Beach, Florida; grandchildren - Michael D. (Beth) Allen, Debbie (Allen) Whirley, Stephen J. (Sarah) Gottschalk; great grandchildren - Lindsay Whirley, Samuel Allen, Kelsey Whirley, Peter Allen and Lilly Gottschalk; nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday (November 15, 2008) in Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary. Rev. Amanda Hines will officiate. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday (November 14, 2008) from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
