Herbert Lee Basford, 95, passed away peacefully November 13, 2016 at Forest
Park, Richmond, IN. Herbert was born in Fleming County, Kentucky November 12, 1921. He
spent most of his adult life as a resident of Wayne County, Indiana. He lived in Richmond,
Centerville, and Greens Fork. Herb and Janice (Tom) were married on August 2, 1947 and they enjoyed 68 years together. Janice passed away earlier this year on January 3. Herb was the son of Charles and Molly (Coldiron) Basford.
Herb enjoyed being a part of several organizations: Odd Fellows, Richmond Conservation Club,and American Legion Post 65. Herb and Janice were both long time members of Faith-TrinityUnited Methodist Church in Richmond. He was an avid race car fan and spent many hours watching NASCAR, USAC, and INDY racing either on TV or at a racetrack. He also enjoyed being a Cincinnati Reds fan.
Herb retired from Belden Corporation in 1985 with over 30 years of employment. He met Janice shortly after he returned from his WW 2 military service in the South Pacific. After they married they raised three sons Thomas Basford (Theresa), Timothy (Sally) Basford and Michael Basford. Herb truly loved being a father and grandfather: Shawntel (Don) Baker, Corinne (Ernie) Westerfield, Hannah Basford (fiance Sam Battistone), Leah Basford, Peter Basford, Kimberly (Chris) Layton, Kary (Clayton) Rutland, Bretton (Jennifer) Basford; also being a great grandfather: Issiah & Ashtyn Baker, Starla & Logan Westerfield, Jessica Nesselrodt, Rebekah, Preston & Anna Neidigk, Eden & Bretton Basford, Mark & Amber Buchs: and being a great­great grandfather: Jacob and Thomas Buchs, He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and was blessed by a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother (Chester Basford), sisters (Bess Keever, Wanda Snow, Rose Stevens) and son Thomas Lee Basford.
Arrangements for Herbert Lee Basford are being handled by Riggle Walterman Mortuary.
Calling and memorial service will be at Faith-Trinity United Methodist Church (2900 West Main Street) on Thursday, November 17, 2016. Calling will begin at 11 a.m. and memorial service win follow at 1 p.m. Pastors Jay and Charlotte Barden will officiate. Entombment with military rites by the Wayne County Honor Guard will follow in Earlham Mausoleum
