Obituary

J. Robert "Bob" Galyean, age 82, of Richmond, died Thursday morning (August 27, 2009) at his residence. He was born in West Alexandira, Ohio on October 19, 1926 to R. Donald and Doris Welsh Galyean and had lived in this area most of his life. He attended early grade school in Richmond and was a 1944 graduate of Miamisburg (Ohio) High School. He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. He attended the University of Dayton, Indiana University and graduated from Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana earning a bachelor's degree in accounting. Following graduation in 1951 he assumed a position with the National Cash Register Company as an accounting sales representative in their Richmond office. Later, he joined an area motor freight company where he became their executive vice president. During this time he was elected president of the Indiana Accounting and Finance Council of the American Trucking Association where he also served as a director of that association. He retired in 1992 from the former Harris-Allied Broadcast Equipment Company in Richmond. Bob was actively involved in local community affairs. He was past chairman and vice chairman of the local chapter of the American Red Cross where he also served a number of years on their Board of Directors. He was a past president of the Richmond Jaycees and a former member and past chairman of the Budget & Review Committee of the United Way. He was past board chairman of the Richmond Noon Kiwanis Club. Bob served as chairman for the late Congressman David W. Dennis's successful Tenth District Campaign organization. He was a former Board Member of Forest Hills Country Club. In 1973 he was appointed by then Governor Otis Bowen to serve as a member of the Indiana School for the Deaf Advisory Committee. In 1984 he received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Governor Robert Orr for his service to that committee. He was a 50 year member of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite and of Minerva Lodge #98 F & AM. Survivors include his wife - Carolyn Galyean whom he married November 2, 1952; daughter - Susan (John) Abrams of Hagerstown; sons - Ronald Galyean of Richmond and Thomas Galyean of Indianapolis; grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, a sister, Betty Lou Wallace, and a brother, Ronnie Galyean, are also deceased. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday (August 30, 2009) in Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary. Rev. Paul Mingus will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in West Alexandria, Ohio. Friends may call on Sunday (August 30, 2009) from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
