James Scott Porter, age 78, of Richmond, Indiana went peacefully home to his Lord and Savior June 10, 2024 at Reid Health surrounded by family and friends.
Scott was born January 21, 1946 in Richmond, Indiana to J. Lawrence and Ema Lou Porter. He was lovingly raised by his parents along side his brother Steve. He was a graduate of Richmond High School and went on to earn his degree at Indiana University in 1970. He was also a veteran of the United States Army National Guard.
He dedicated his career to the Real Estate industry. His passion for real estate was evident in his commitment to provide exceptional service going above and beyond for his clients. Not only was he a successful agent, earning many awards throughout the years, he was a tremendous mentor to many in the real estate field. He spent his time mentoring and guiding fellow agents, sharing his knowledge and experience to help so many succeed in their own careers. His mentorship was invaluable to those he worked with and he was always willing to offer advice, support and encouragement to help those around him reach their full potential. His legacy in real estate was not just in the deals he closed, but in the relationships he built and the impact he had on those along the way.
He was a generous soul who was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it was to his community, friends, family or even strangers in need. His acts of kindness were done quietly and without any desire for recognition or praise. He simply believed in doing good for others. His selflessness and humility were truly admirable and his actions inspired others. His strong faith was a driving force in all he did. Scott's kindness and generosity left a lasting legacy in the hearts of all who knew him.
He loved attending the Indianapolis 500 each year with his brother and friends. He shared in the excitement of the sport and was a true race fan. Scott mostly loved the game of golf though and his many plaques and trophies are a testament to his lifelong love of the game. In 1964 he won the Richmond City Tournament for the first time at the age of 18 and went on to win again in 1980. Scott was a two time champion in the Richmond City Senior and Wayne County Amateur tournaments with honorary finishes in the United States Amateur and Indiana Amateur along with so many more. Later years, he cherished his many days at Forest Hills Country Club, where he was a lifelong member, enjoying weekend golf games with dear friends and loved ones. His passion for the game was evident and his skill and talent on the course will always be remembered.
He was not only a skilled golfer but also a devoted grandfather to Ryder who took great joy in watching his grandson excel in sports. Whether it was on the basketball court or the golf course, he was always there to cheer him on and offer support. Seeing his grandson succeed and grow in his own athletic pursuits filled him with pride and happiness. The bond they shared was a special one and he cherished every moment they spent together.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and Ryan Cate, Daughter Holly Forrest, Brother and Sister-in-law Steve and Sally Porter, Grandson Ryder Cate, Cherished Friend Sylvia Ferrell, his puppy Rory and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda S. Porter and parents J. Lawrence and Ema Lou Porter.
A celebration of Scott's life will be Sunday June 30, 2024 at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church 1601 South A Street Richmond, Indiana. Pastor Marty Holman officiating.
