Jan William Passmore, 85, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away on July 25, 2026. He was born November 5, 1940, in Winchester, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Boa Passmore.

He was the son of Dr. Gale Orth Passmore and Helen Louise Hoskinson Passmore. A graduate of Union City-Wayne High School, he attended Nebraska State College and graduated from Ball State University, with graduate studies at San Jose State University.

During a long and distinguished business career in insurance, risk management, real estate, and investments, he served in senior management positions with three Fortune 500 companies, including Aetna (Indianapolis, Hartford, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and San Jose), Corroon & Black (San Jose, President/CEO), and Aon Corporation (Indianapolis, President/CEO). His leadership in business was acknowledged with his selection to many advisory boards, including Cigna (Chair), Aetna (Chair), St. Paul, Fireman's Fund, Travelers, Chubb, Insurance Company of North America (Chair), Kemper, MarketDyne International (Chair), and the Western Association of Insurance Brokers. He owned and led a number of private companies, served on the boards of several others, and consulted for several Fortune 500 companies.

An active volunteer throughout his life, Jan contributed much back to the communities in which he lived, including Kiwanis (Club President, Harrisburg and San Jose; Lt. Governor, Pennsylvania; Chairman, Richmond, IN), Boy Scouts of America (Council President, Santa Clara County; Board Vice President, Crossroads Council, Indianapolis), Dunn Mental Health (Board), Centerstone National Foundation (Board), Goodwill Industries (Board President, 5 years), Hope Rehabilitation Services (Board President), United Way of Santa Clara County (Board), Alexian Brothers Hospital (Board), Wayne County Chamber of Commerce (Board Chairman), Wayne County Economic Development Corporation (Founding Board President), Industries, Inc. (Board President), Richmond-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce (Board Chair), Small Business Development Center (Chairman), City of Richmond Economic Development Commission (President), Scott Boys Club (Board of Trustees President), Behavioral Healthcare Services (Board President), San Jose Country Club (Board), First United Methodist Church of San Jose (Chair, Board of Trustees), Alum Rock Methodist Church (Chair, Board of Trustees), San Jose Trolley Corp. (Board), United Way of Whitewater Valley (Board Chairman and Interim President), Safety Village of Wayne County (Founder & Board President), Ball State University Insurance Department Advisory Board (Chairman), Ball State University Cardinal Funds (President, 10 years), Union City Alumni Association (President, 6 years), United Methodist Foundation of Indiana (Vice Chair), and numerous other community organizations.

Over the years he received recognition from many organizations: Silicon Valley Citizen of the Year, Knight Ridder Doer's Profile, Kiwanis International Distinguished Service Awards, and was named a George F. Hixson Fellow. He received proclamations from the State of California Senate, State of California Assembly, Mayor of San Jose, and County of Santa Clara. He was also recognized by Goodwill Industries, Hope Rehabilitation, Theta Xi Fraternity (Outstanding Alumnus), American Red Cross, United Way, Boy Scouts of America (Silver Beaver), and Ball State University (Beneficence Society, Fellows Society Award of Achievement). He was selected as a commencement speaker and was named an Honorary Kentucky Colonel, Mason of the Year, and Union City Alumni of the Year 2020. In business, his recognitions included Aetna Citizen of the Year and the Corroon & Black Distinguished Leadership Award, twice. Jan was profiled over the years in Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in America. A published author, his book on the history of America's Vice Presidents, A Heartbeat Away, received good reviews and was the subject of a PBS special.

He was married to Pamela Boa on Valentine's Day. He had been a member of San Jose Country Club (Treasurer), Sainte Claire Club (Chair, Long Range Planning), Highland Country Club, Forest Hills Country Club (Chair, Long Range Planning), Eagle Pointe Golf Club, and The Columbia Club (Chair, Long Range Planning). He was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, Shrine, and DeMolay, and a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Jan enjoyed golf, traveling the world, collecting historical documents, his vacation homes, and especially his springer spaniels.

Jan and Pamela had no children. He is survived by extended family, including his sister-in-law, Candice (Daniel) Morguson; nephew Michael (Malissa) Morguson; niece Sara McGee; and nieces Macy, Katie, and Emma.

Funeral services for Jan will be held at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Earlham Cemetery.
