John H. Stapleton, age 90, died Saturday afternoon (March 19, 2011) in the Inpatient Hospice Unit at Reid Hospital in Richmond. He was born May 10, 1920 to John W. and Ida (Spears) Stapleton in Preble County, Ohio. He was a 1939 graduate of Lincoln High School in Cambridge City. John worked at Belden and then became an over the road truck driver, retiring after 35 years. He served in the Army Air Force as a supply technician from November 6, 1940 to September 28, 1945. John was stationed in the Galapagos Islands and in India. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon and the American Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star. John was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church serving on the Property Board and Church Council. As a member of American Legion Post 65, he volunteered as a driver taking veterans to and from the Dayton VA Hospital. He was also a member of the board of Interfaith Apartments. John enjoyed gardening and yard work, taking pride in having one of the nicest lawns in the neighborhood. John married Mary Jane Morrison on August 9, 1947. They spent part of their retirement years in the 1980's and 90's traveling the U.S., particularly the southwestern states. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary Jane; daughter, Debbie Stapleton; special daughter, Suzie Oaks; son, Jim (Lannie) Stapleton all of Richmond; granddaughter, Julie (Cory) Dawson of Greenwood, IN; grandson, Brian (Jamie) Stapleton of Pendleton, IN; great granddaughters, Rachel and Amanda Dawson, and Kinley Stapleton; sisters Helen Ryker of Franklin, IN, Thelma Wray of Cincinnati, OH, Betty Jane Stapleton of Richmond, Olivia (Mick) Fowler of Cambridge City, IN; sisters-in-law, Janette Stapleton of Dublin, IN, Jeanne Allen and Carol (Bud) Cox of Richmond, Helen Morrison of Crawfordsville, IN. John was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Maxine Dixon and Pearl Reno; brothers Stanley, Lester, Clyde and Harry Stapleton. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (March 24, 2011) at Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary, 32 South 11th Street, Richmond with Pastor Robert Meckley officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
