Obituary

Joseph J. Baumer, age 96 of Richmond, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday March 20, 2024 at home while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Richmond, Indiana on January 18, 1928 to Leonard and Margaret (Quniter) Baumer and had lived in the area all of his life. He graduated from St. Andrews School in the class of 1942. Joe was a WWII United States Army veteran. He spent time serving in Japan in 1947 as a Squad Leader for the Paratrooper 11th Airborne. Joe married the love of his life Marcella Baumer at St. Andrews Catholic Church on February 9, 1952. Joe retired from Wayne Dairy after spending most of his working career as a pasteurizer. He also delivered vehicles at Northgate and was an avid collector of Beer Steins. He was an ultimate Notre Dame football fan, he volunteered in the kitchen at Seton Catholic School, became Grand Council for Young Men's Institute (YMI) and thoroughly enjoyed dancing and going to dances with his family and friends. Joe always had an immaculate lawn. He loved to care for his lawn and landscaping around his home.

Special gratitude to Bill Werner who continued to visit Joe up to the end of his life.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons Gregory (Laurie) Baumer of Newburg, IN and Mark (Barb) Baumer of Richmond, IN; siblings Edward Baumer and Catherine Perkins; granddaughters Lesli Baumer of Richmond, IN, Amy (Andy) Glass of Cincinnati, OH and Dr. Annie Baumer-Askin (John Michael Askin) of Louisville, KY; great granddaughters Alysa Baumer of Richmond, IN, Alexis Baumer of Richmond, IN and Lucy Glass of Cincinnati, OH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Marcella and siblings Lois Bender, Anna Chance and Mary Hardwick.

Liturgy of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday March 25, 2024, at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Father Sengole Gnanaraj will officiate. Burial will immediately follow in St. Andrew Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-6pm on Sunday March 24, 2024, at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary, 32 South 11th St. Richmond.
