Karl Morris Sharp, 83, recently of Centerville, passed away on March 4, 2013 after breaking his hip in a fall last week. Born on March 20, 1929 in Indianapolis, he spent most of his childhood in Plainfield, Illinois. Later, his family moved to Muncie, where in 1946 he graduated from Muncie Burris High School. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1951, played the flute in the Purdue marching band, and developed life-long friendships with his fellow residents at the Rochdale House. After graduation, he was hired by Perfect Circle, later to be merged with Dana Corporation, where he worked for 41 years as an engineer/sales representative, retiring as National Sales Manager in 1989. Karl was always civic minded and his activities included the Hagerstown Jaycees, where he served as President when the organization received the National Youth Fitness Award in 1958. He also served as an election official in Hagerstown and later held political posts in Richmond, including Richmond City Council Member from 1999 to 2007. A life-long Republican, he was a delegate to the 1992 Republican National Convention. He served as Chairman of the Wayne County Republicans from 1989 ��" 1993. Karl was a man of strong faith, active in the Central United Methodist Church in Richmond from 1973 to the present. He was also active in the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and the Yokefellows at Earlham College. He was United Way Board Chairman in 1998. Karl is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marjorie Ann Peters Sharp; three married children: Terry Sharp (Beth) of Plantation, Florida, Gail Sharp (Dorothy) of Boyertown, Pennsylvania, Karen Pipes (Greg) of Centerville; five grandchildren: Adrienne Zarn (Michael), Erin Williams (Hugh), Peter Sharp (Anuta), Karl Maurer and Nicholas Maurer; five great grandchildren: Linda, Christopher, Althea, Hunter and Ksusha.l Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (March 9, 2013) in Central United Methodist Church (1425 East Main Street, Richmond). Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday (March 8, 2013) from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church, to Richmond Civic Theatre (1003 East Main Street, Richmond, IN 47374), or to United Way of Whitewater Valley (129 South 9th St., Richmond, IN 47374).
