Obituary

Lorraine Tolliver Levin, age 83, of Richmond, died Thursday morning (January 9, 2014) at Friends Fellowship Community where she had been a resident since August 2010.  Lorraine was born on July 23, 1930 in Harlan County, Kentucky and was the third of seven children of Elbert and Maggie Tolliver. Lorraine was gifted in the arts and began writing poetry and short stories as early as age thirteen and continued doing so for the rest of her life.  Her love of poetry and writing led her to write hundreds of poems, of which over 300 have appeared in various publications. Lorraine's journey in life led her to many places.  She lived in Tennessee, Indiana and Ohio before she moved to the Los Angeles, California area where she lived over 50 years.  She moved to Richmond in 2004 to be near her family.  It was when she lived in Ohio that she first took writing classes at the University of Cincinnati.  This led to a job as a commercial writer in Dayton, Ohio.  She subsequently moved to Los Angeles where she continued her education.  She earned her  B.A. Degree in English at California State College. She later earned her Master of Arts Degree in English from UCLA.  She then began her college teaching career. For many years she taught writing, literature and other English courses at a variety of colleges in the Los Angeles area. Over the years Lorraine and her siblings and their spouses have been able to make annual vacation trips around the country and Canada as a family.  It was always the highlight of her year to spend this time with family.  After moving to Richmond she participated in a professional women's club and several  literature and world affairs discussion groups.    She is survived by her siblings June (Joe) Clements of Richmond, Geraldine Jones of Frankfort, Kentucky, Cordell (Patricia) Tolliver of Middlesboro, Kentucky, Clark (Lucille) Tolliver of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sister-in-law Evelyn Tolliver of Corbin, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.   Her only child, Roger Regensburg, who was also gifted in the arts, died at the age of 26. Her brother Frank Tolliver, of Corbin, Kentucky, (twin of Clark) died in April, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and an older sister, Gertrude, who died at 9 months.  She was married twice; Tom Regensburg and Jerry Levin.  Both were journalists,  and both preceded her in death. Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday (January 13, 2014) at Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary. Rev. Charles Black and Rev. Amanda Hines will officiate. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday (January 13, 2014) from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
