Lowell R. "Dick" Culbertson, age 86, of Richmond, died Tuesday (October 13, 2009) at his residence. He was born in Wayne County on May 17, 1923 to Lowell L. and Priscilla Arnold Culbertson and had lived in this area all of his life. He was a 1942 graduate of Jefferson High School (New Paris, Ohio) and was a US Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of Shawnee Plastics. He was a member of Saint Andrew Church, VFW Post 1108, a life member of the Knights of Saint John and an active participant in the Widowed Persons Service Joy Group where he was affectionately known at the "Mad Hugger". His wife, Doris Culbertson, died February 8, 1996. Survivors include his children - Leslie Culbertson, Lois Culbertson, Lisa Culbertson, Lance (Betty) Culbertson, Laura (David) Halcomb, Lorraine (Larry) Smith and Lowell T. "Tim" (Jennifer) Culbertson all of Richmond; brother - Marion (Bridgett) Culbertson of Richmond; sister - Patricia Simpson of New Paris; 22 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special friends - Jim Ulrich, Jim Guard and Denny and Ruth Morse. A sister, Virginia Whirley, 3 great grandchildren and a special friend, Bertha Kehlenbrink are also deceased. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Saturday (October 17, 2009) in Saint Andrew Church. Burial with military graveside services will be in Saint Andrew Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday (October 17, 2009) from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 1108 or to the Disabled American Veterans both in care of 213 South 8th St. Richmond, Indiana 47374.
