Marcella Eileen (Smock) Jefferies was born December 7, 1925, to Robert Franklin and Julia Esther (Martin) Smock. She lived a long and full 98 years passing March 12, 2024. Marcella's early years were spent on her family's farm in Lynn, Indiana. She often spoke fondly of spending time with her mother, helping with household chores and preparing meals for those who came back to the house hungry from working the farm. Weekends were fun when the children from neighboring farms came to their house to play. With four boys – Art, Bob, Louie, and Charley – and five girls – Jean, Esther, Marcella, Marge and Annabelle – theirs was the home with the most kids and that made it the gathering place for all. Marcella carried this strong sense of family throughout her life.
Marcella's 16th birthday was notable, not only because it was her 16th birthday, but it was also the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. She went on to graduate from Lynn High School and after graduation, she moved to Richmond to support herself and the war effort by working in a factory. It was her first time away from home and she had moved to 'the city'. She roomed with other young women who were doing the same. One night when out with friends, she met William Jefferies, a young Marine who had just returned from fighting in the Pacific. He definitely caught her eye! Marcella and William (aka Bill or Jeff) were married in 1945.
The young couple settled in Richmond and soon started a family. First came their daughter Priscilla, then son Rick, and finally, their youngest, Mark. True to her early upbringing, Marcella created a warm and welcoming home for her family and friends. As her children started families of their own, she was a very involved grandmother.
With all she was doing, Marcella also worked at Hoppe Jewelers. She enjoyed her relationships with her coworkers and customers and made many friends over the 50+ years she was at Hoppe's, retiring at age 83. Marcella remained very active throughout her life walking every day, maintaining an immaculate home, and gardening.
Marcella is survived by her son Rick (Kathleen) Jefferies, six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Marcella was dear to us with her sweet disposition and warmth toward all. She lives on with love in our hearts and memories.
