Obituary

On March 31, 2025 while living in Assisted Living at Forest Park Health Campus, Mary Kay lost her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Our family and her friends lost one of their greatest prayer warriors here on earth, but know she will continue to pray for all of us from Heaven.

Mary Katherine (Mary Kay) Hankosky was born on July 21, 1942 at Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Indiana to John and Elizabeth (Svarczkopf) Bodolai.

Mary Kay attended elementary school at St. Andrew and Holy Family Catholic schools. She graduated from Richmond High school in 1960, received her Bachelor Degree in education from Marian College and Masters Degree from Ball State University. Her 37 years was spent teaching at Finley, Holy Family, Centerville-Abington and Rose Hamilton elementary schools. She was also an accomplished pianist and marimba player.

She married Ralph (Hank) Hankosky on July 6, 1996 at Holy Family Church, they were married for ten years until his death on March 13, 2007.

She was a member of the National Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association and Wayne County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a current member of the Richmond Lay Franciscans of Oldenburg, Indiana, and the Miraculous Medal Association where she maintained the memberships of 500 individuals. She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John, YMI Ladies Auxiliary, Hoosier Corners Square Dance Club, Widowed Persons and Richmond Senior Center. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Andrew Church for 15 years.

Mary Kay is survived by a special cousin Lannie Stapleton, husband Jim and their family Julie (Sean), Brian (Meagan), Rachel (Greyson), Amanda, Kinley, Kyla and Revyn, her Uncle Ken Lohmeier and all her Svarczkopf relatives, brother-in-law Bob Hankosky (Vivian), nephew Rob (Doris) Hankosky, niece Cindy Peppin, great niece Misty Hankosky and her family and all other members of the Hankosky family. Special friends Sallie Senese, Dan & Kathleen Senese, Lisa Shroyer, Mona Gambill, Mike & Cindy Potter and their family, Ron and Donna Helderman, Ellie Coffman, Betty Jones, Sue Simko, Rita Wildman, Loretta Martin, Delphine Schwartz & Kathy Moll. Members of Richmond's Lay Franciscans, her VIP nuns at Oldenburg Sisters Mary Fliehman, Edna Martini and Claire Whalen and Jane Schaefer & and Carol Meyer Associate co-directors at Oldenburg.

In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her infant sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Her Godparents John & Margaret Senese, and special friends Gus & Ethel Magson, Ruth & Glenn McDermott, Phyllis & Berl Wesler, Moreta Rinehart and Vivian Younts.

Special thanks to Dr. Ina Agrawal, Reid Hospice, especially their four special employees Laura, Meagan, Brittany and Virginia who have been with Mary Kay throughout her journey in hospice. Many thanks also to the past and current staff at Forest Park Health Campus, the oncology department at Reid Health and Simon Cancer Center.

Visitation will be at Riggle-Waltermann Funeral Home on Monday, April 7th from 10:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at Holy Family Catholic Church at 1:30 p.m. with Monsignor Mark Svarczkopf officiating. Burial will take place following the Mass at St. Andrew Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are asked to be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Seton Catholic High School or the Sisters of Francis in Oldenburg, Indiana.
