Mary Boyd Mathewson, age 84, of Richmond, died unexpectedly on Thursday (April 8, 2010) at Reid Hospital due to complications following surgery. She was born in Vanceburg, Kentucky oon April 17, 1925 to Everett and Mary Boyd Burris and was the youngest of 5 children. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James Mathewson, in October 2009 and by her son, Christy, in October 1950. She is survived by her two daughters - Leah (Greg) Hoffman of Richmond, Jama (Bob) Crowe of Centerville; 4 grandchildren - Jessica Hoffman of Indianapolis, Emily (John) McClain of Indianapolis, Jimmy Hoffman and Alivia Crowe both of Richmond; sister - Thelma Daugherty of Wooster, Ohio; sisters-in-law - Lois Walden, Dorothy Wood Britt, Carolyn Owens; nieces and nephews. Mary was raised on a farm in Tolesboro, Kentucky. She graduated from high school in Tolesboro and then attended Berea College and Morehead State College so she could teach elementary school. Mary was a 60 year member of the Eastern Star in Tolesboro and a life-long member of First Christian Church. She was a member and past president of the American Business Women's Association and a 40 year member of the Richmond Power Boat Club. She was an interior decorator and had owned and operated Merle Norman Cosmetics. Mary's true loves were her husband Jim, their daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and many dear friends including Anna Owens. She was a selflessly dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her family, her other passion was boating and camping on the Ohio River. Services will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday (April 14, 2010) in Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary (32 South 11th Street, Richmond, Indiana) . Rev. Amanda Hines will officiate. Friends may call on Wednesday (April 14, 2010) from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be on Thursday (April 15, 2010) at 3:00 pm in Black Oak Cemetery in Vanceburg, Kentucky.
