Phillip E. Uhl, 86, a local architect, died on Friday (November 2, 2012) at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after a brief illness. He was born on September 10, 1926 in Marion, Indiana to the late August and Wilhelmenia Uhl and graduated from Marion High School in 1944. He was in the Navy and served during the Korean War as an aviation ordinance man. He graduated from Lain Architectural Drafting College and became a registered architect in 1962. He started his career in Fort Wayne and moved to Richmond in 1967. He did several projects in the mid-west including designing retirement centers in St. Joseph, Lansing and Ann Arbor, Michigan; Kansas City, Missouri and McComb, Illinois. Major projects in Indiana include Snider High School in Fort Wayne, Northside and Muncie Central High Schools and Ball State University Service Center in Muncie; Sharpsville High School and Middle School, restoration and remodeling of the Johnson County Courthouse and the Corydon High School remodeling and junior high addition. He served as project architect for R.W. Clinton, Inc. on several local projects including the Masonic Temple (for which he received a commendation from the Grand Master of Indiana), the original building for Interfaith Retirement Center, Tiano Pool at Richmond High School, First National Bank remodeling and addition (now BankOne), Indiana Employment and Security Division Office, Palladium-Item office building, Friends Fellowship Apartments, Dennis Middle School remodeling and addition, Residential Treatment Center at Richmond State Hospital, and the Richmond Promenade, for which he traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive a national design award during a ceremony at the White House. He was an active member of First Christian Church and had served as a Deacon, Elder, Property Chair, Trustee, and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Richmond Lions Club where he served as chairman for their 25th Anniversary Home Show. He was awarded the highest award for a Lion, the Melvin Jones Fellow, in 2009. He also served on the YMCA Board of Directors for two terms and was an active member of the Richmond Y's Men's Club where he served as secretary/treasurer, Memorial Fund Chairman, and President. He received the YMCA's Luther Koehring Award in 1989. He also served as District Governor for the Y's Men in Indiana in the Mid-America Region and received the Elmer Crowe Award as an outstanding District Governor. He was a Mason and a member of Southgate Lodge in Fort Wayne, the Waynedale, Indiana Lodge and an Honorary Member of Richmond Lodge #196. He was also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite member of the Fort Wayne Valley. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Helen Louise White Uhl; son - Brian Uhl (Betty) of Fountain City; daughter - Cathy Uhl Wesler (Michael) of Birmingham, Alabama; sister - Mary Ellen Steckham of Fort Myers, Florida; four grandchildren - Melissa and Steven Uhl and Jeffrey and Katie Wesler. Visitation will be on Tuesday (November 6, 2012) from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary where a Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m.. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday (November 7, 2012) at the funeral home. Rev. Amanda Hines will officiate. Burial will be in Goshen Cemetery.
