Obituary



Raymond Brooks Baynes, age 88 of Richmond died Friday evening (September 15, 2006) at his residence.� He was born on March 30, 1918 in Salem, Indiana to Raymond and Elizabeth Brooks Baynes and had lived in this area most of his life.� He was an Army-Air Corp veteran of World War II.� He was a navigator on the B-17 Bomber and was captured and held as a prisoner of war.� He was a 1949 graduate of Hanover College and received a Masters Degree in 1952 from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio).� Brooks began his career as a teacher in 1938 teaching in a one-room school.� He was a teacher, principal and coach for Richmond Community Schools from 1949 to 1984.� He also taught math at Ivy Tech State College from 1984 to 1988.� During his time in the public school system he spent his summers painting houses.� Painting became a full-time vocation after his retirement from the teaching.� He enjoyed bowling, golf and horse racing.� He also enjoyed vacationing, particularly in Sanibel Island, Florida.� He was a member and trustee at First Friends Meeting.



Survivors include his wife of 56 years - Jane Baynes;

Daughters - Debbie Williams of Madison, Indiana,

Caroline (Alan) Freedman of Tucson, Arizona;

Son - Stephen (Karen) Baynes of Kissimmee, Florida;

Sisters - Clara Shelby of Mt. Vernon, Indiana,

Ruth Ansbury of Cape Girardeau, Missouri;

Grandchildren - Katie Williams, Mandy Williams, Heather Williams and Tara Williams;

Nieces & Nephews



Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday (September 18, 2006) in First Friends Meeting, 2010 Chester Blvd., Richmond.� Doug Gwyn will officiate.� Friends may call on Monday (September 18, 2006) from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the church.� Burial will be at 12:00 noon on Tuesday (September 19, 2006) in the Highland Friends Cemetery in Salem, Indiana.� Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 689, Columbus, Indiana� 47202 or to Reid Hospital Foundation for Hospice, 1401 Chester Blvd., Richmond, Indiana 47374.� Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. www.riggle-waltermann.com
