Richard T. Decker, age 91 of Richmond, Indiana went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday May 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Prospect Park, New Jersey on December 2, 1932, to Richard and Nancy Bos Decker. Richard proudly served his country in the US Navy, before his discharge he married the love of his life Elsie Mae Vanderweit on September 17, 1955, in Paterson, NJ. In a house filled with love, Richard and Elsie raised four beautiful children Richard, Ronald, Beverly and Nancy. Richard worked for many years in New Jersey as a milkman as their children grew older and started families of their own, Richard and Elsie decided to move to Florida where he worked as a manager in the Lawn and Garden department. In 1998 he decided to retire, they moved to Richmond, IN to be closer to family. He always enjoyed growing his own garden, many people referred to him as "the tomato man" because he grew the best tomato's and he sold them for many years, always chatting up the people that would come to buy the vegetables from his garden. Richard was a talented woodworker, he made many unique crafts throughout the years that he eventually starting selling them at craft shows. He was a longtime member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and previously attended Hodgin Road Christian Church.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife: Elsie Mae Decker; children Richard (Lynn) Decker, Ronald (Veronica) Decker, Beverly (Phil) King and Nancy (John) Carbone; brothers Bob (Margie) Decker and Al (June) Decker; sister Ruth (Tom) Hall; 13 grandchildren Denise Decker, Ann Decker, Jessica (Jason) Allen, Richard (Janet) Decker, Kimberly (Eric) Davis, Philip Kreps, Stephanie Kreps, Jamiee (Sam) Allen, Austin Kreps, Kelle (Emily) Carbone, Summer Carbone, John (Jordan) Carbone, Taylor (Ryan) McPherson; 11 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Nancy Decker and one great grandson Landon J. Davis.
Pastor Martin Holman will officiate services for Richard starting at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday May 7, 2024, at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary. Burial will immediately follow in Earlham Cemetery Veteran Field of Honor. Visitation for friends and family will be held prior to the service at the funeral home from 11am-1pm on Tuesday May 7, 2024.
