Our hero, Richard (Dick) Smith, age 83, of Richmond, IN, left us on Wednesday (January 1, 2014) at Reid Hospital after a long illness. Richard (Dick) Smith was born on December 23, 1930 in Richmond, IN to Walter and Helen Smith. Dick was a Korean War Purple Heart recipient, retired Richmond Police Department Captain, and retired New Paris Ohio Police Chief. He was preceded in death by his bride of 55 years, Janice Benn Smith, who he married on July 19, 1954 and one great grandson (Briggham Richard Smith). Dick is survived by Rachelle Huston (Randy) of Parker, CO, Richard D. Smith (Becky) of Richmond, IN, Susan Wardlow of Muncie, IN, Sara Kahle (John) of Richmond, IN, and Scott Smith of Indianapolis, IN; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and his faithful buddy, Chunkie. Private visitation was held for the family at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary. A military ceremony will be held in the spring at the Field of Honor in Earlham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Dick's honor to VFW Post 1108.
