Robert Stephens Byrd, age 91, of Richmond, died Wednesday afternoon (October 12, 2011) at Reid Hospital. Bob was born in Richmond on August 19, 1920 and graduated from Richmond High School in 1939. He graduated from Earlham College in 1943 and then studied at the Guilmant School of Music in New York City. While in New York, Bob was organist at the Episcopal Church where George Washington had once worshipped. After returning to Richmond he taught music in Darke and Randolph County schools. He then taught organ at Earlham College for thirty years and has served as organist in area churches for the last 50 years. Robert was a natural and accomplished organist and artist. He was preceded in death by his parents, Geo and Chloe Byrd, his brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Marjorie Byrd, and a niece, Carolyn Byrd. Survivors include his niece - Sally Byrd; nephews - Dick and Bob Byrd; great nieces and great nephews. Services will be private. There will be no public visitation. Burial will be in Beamsville Cemetery in Beamsville, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital Tribute Program, PO Box 1000, Dept 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
