Obituary

Robert "Bob" Ray Mallett (age 88) passed away at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind. on March 8, 2024 following several months of declining health. Born March 3, 1936 in Vincennes, Ind. to Hubert Don Mallett and Evelyn Young Mallett Snow, Bob attended Lincoln High School in Vincennes before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1953. After his military service (which included travels to Okinawa, Japan and Thailand), he took advantage of the GI Bill to earn his undergraduate and master's degrees in education from Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Bob came to Richmond in the early 1960s to teach at Pleasant View Junior High School, moving over to Richmond High School shortly thereafter, where he taught business and math courses until his retirement in 1991. It was there the dean of girls Miss Janet Turpin caught his eye. They married in 1968 and remained together for 34 years until Jan's death in 2002.

During summer breaks and in his spare time, Bob sold real estate and painted houses as a paid hobby that turned into a second career after he retired from teaching. A lifelong outdoorsman, Bob eagerly looked forward to deer hunting each fall and morel mushroom season each spring. The stories generated from his many fishing adventures to Brookville Lake, Patoka Lake, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Mexico, Alaska and elsewhere are legendary among his family and friends. Bob was a member of First Christian Church in Richmond, the American Legion and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, in addition to volunteering with the Community Food Pantry and Morrison-Reeves Library book sales. He was an avid reader, had a wicked sweet tooth and loved his coffee.

Bob is survived by daughter Amy Lynch of Indianapolis; son Jeffrey Mallett of Richmond; grandsons Isaac Lynch of Mooresville, Ind. and Michael Lynch of Indianapolis; sister Vickie Ravellette (Dan) of Vincennes; brother David Snow of Missouri City, Tex.; brother James Mallett of Monroe City, Ind.; sister Rhonda Russell of Jasper, Ind.; sister-in-law Jean Turpin of Richmond; cousins; nieces; nephews; extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don Mallett, his sister Patty Evans, and his wife Janet Mallett.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at First Christian Church in Richmond with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. and a memorial service at 2 p.m. Private burial of his ashes will take place later in Goshen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Community Food Pantry or Morrison-Reeves Library (both in Richmond), or to any favorite charity.
