Rodney "Rod" Roger Smalley, age 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday August 9, 2024, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on February 5, 1942, to Robert G. Smalley and Bertha Woityna Smalley. He obtained his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Toledo University in 1966. Rod married Ruth "Kathy" Donovan Smalley in Toledo, OH in 1969 and they moved to the Richmond area in 1975, together they raised three beautiful children; Kristen, Robert and Kelli. Rod worked and retired from Johns Manville where he dedicated 40+ years of his working career as an engineer. His passion was restoring old cars, having owned his own Model T Ford and restoring it himself, he enjoyed volunteering at the Model T Museum and was a 4H leader for 18 years.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years Ruth "Kathy" Smalley; children Kristen (Jason) Middeton, Kelli Smalley and Robert (Deb) Smalley; brother Bob Smalley; grandchildren Quinn Smalley, Declan Smalley, Liam Smalley and Maggie Middleton; niece Susannah Whiteaker. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Bertha Smalley.
Pastor Chip Belanga will officiate services for Rod at 4pm on Wednesday August 21, 2024, at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 2-4pm on Wednesday August 21, 2024, at the funeral home.
