Thomas A. Maurer, 90, passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, February 18, after an extended illness. He was born in Richmond, IN on January 8, 1936 to Harry and Anna Maurer, the 8th of 13 children. He is survived by his 4 children, Chris (John) Peek of Indianapolis, Tom (Jody) of Webster Groves, MO, Laura (Matt) Hays of Indianapolis, and Doug (Carrie) of Falls Church, VA, along with granddaughters Abby Hays of Madison, WI, and Corrine Hays of Ann Arbor, MI. He is also survived by siblings Phil Maurer, Marilyn Kettler, Marguerite Stephens, Don Maurer, and Harry Maurer. Tom was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Anna Marie (Sulprizio) Maurer and by siblings Charles Maurer, Martha Fulton, Betty Werner, Richard Maurer, John Maurer, Mary Jane Dolehanty, and infant Harry Maurer Jr.
Tom attended St. Andrews grade school and was a 1954 graduate of Richmond High School, after which he served in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Riley Kansas. On June 6, 1959 he married Anna Marie Sulprizio at St. Andrews in Richmond. Tom also began a long career at Voyles News Agency, starting as a delivery driver and serving as Manager for over 30 years. His tireless work ethic was a defining trait which was admired by his many co-workers over the years, including all 4 of his children and many other nieces and nephews who worked both full time and part time at Voyles and the company bookstore, Readmore.
Tom was a longtime parishioner at St. Andrews Catholic Church, where he also served as usher, and was an active member of the Richmond Knights of Columbus Council 580, including serving as Grand Knight. Family and traditions were important to Tom. He took loving care of his wife during her long illness and was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and granddaughters. Tom loved decorating for the holidays, gardening, and listening to a wide range of music including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and Herb Alpert. He was a devoted lifelong fan of Notre Dame football and IU basketball. His bright blue eyes will be missed.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at St. Andrew Church with Fr. Michael Prakash officiating. Burial will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery with military rites performed by the Wayne County Honor Guard. Visitation for Tom will be held on Monday February, 23, from 4-7pm at Riggle-Waltermann Mortuary, 32 S 11th St., Richmond, IN, 47374.
