Viola April Renee Capps, known to many as Mom, Sis, Grandma, and Mimi, passed away on May 18, 2025, surrounded by her children at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She was 51 years old.
Born on July 30, 1973, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Viola spent her life between Richmond and Indianapolis where she raised her family. She wasn't just a mother and grandmother—she was the rock, the center, and the force that held everything together. The one people leaned on and trusted.
Viola was the mother of five sons: Devin Rheinhardt, Trevor Rheinhardt, Jason Leitner, Brandon Leitner, and Sunder Vanwinkle. She is now reunited with her son Devin, whom she missed every day. She raised her family with grit, love, and fierce protection. Her children and grandchildren were never in doubt about where they stood with her—she loved hard and never let anyone forget who they were.
She was the daughter of Carolyn May Capps and Michael James Capps. She is preceded in death by her father Michael, her son Devin, her brother Michael, her uncle Everett, and her aunt Margie, and countless friends.
Viola wasn't one to sit still. She was a creative soul who loved her plants, lived for DIY crafts, and had a playlist full of loud, unapologetic rock music. She had a sharp mind and a strong will, and she never backed down from anything life threw her way.
She didn't just love her grandchildren, Aryan and Kali—she showed them the kind of love that sticks for a lifetime. She also leaves behind more grandchildren—some not tied to her by blood but bonded to her by love.
Viola leaves behind her mother Carolyn; her siblings Shawn, Matt, Chad, Jamie, and Earl (Jamie) her sons Trevor, Jason, Brandon and Sunder; her daughters Brandalynn and Keyana (Jason); her grandchildren Aryan and Kali; Her spouse, Brian Hillard. Special close cousins Jeannie Snowden and Carolyn Kirby, and a few friends who were more like family.
She was the go-to, the one who made things happen, and her absence will be felt in every room she once anchored.
Viola lived life on her terms. She didn't sugarcoat things, but you always knew where she stood—and where you stood with her. She left behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, and truth.
As the song "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd says:
"If I leave here tomorrow / Would you still remember me? / For I must be traveling on now / 'Cause there's too many places I've got to see."
Yes, Viola, April, Sis, Mom, Grandma, Mimi.
She will be missed eternally.
