William "Willie" Drew, age 71, long time Richmond resident, died Monday night (October 12, 2009) after a short struggle with lung cancer. He had been a glass and sign artist for the last 20 years and was an avid golfer. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1957 and later joined the US Air Force in 1960 where he became a Morse Code Interceptor and administrative clerk for the chief of ground safety, New York Air Defense Sector (NYADS) stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. According to his supervisor, "he was one of the most conscientious and hard-working airmen ever assigned to the office." He also pitched for the NYADS fast pitch softball team. Survivors include his son, Jeff Drew; daughter Jana Drew; granddaughter Mikenzie Drew. He is now reunited with his father, Casper Drew, two brothers, Roland and James Drew, and his mother, Mary Abrams. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday (October 17, 2009) at Crown Hill Cemetery (Centerville). Pastor David Anderson of Fountain City Wesleyan Church will officiate.
